The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international and ecumenical centre that supports and promotes nonviolent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action that entails the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing the preconditions for building peace.

The Life & Peace Institute envisions a world where peace, justice and non-violent relations prevail through people’s active work and commitment. We have been active towards achieving this goal since 1985.

The Life & Peace Institute works by supporting local civil society organisations in Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Objective(s)
  • Civil society support and engagement. We support civil society organisations, with a special emphasis on faith-based organisations, in their conflict transformation work through capacity building and joint engagement in research and action.

  • Policy work and awareness-raising. We engage directly and in collaboration with others on awareness-raising and policy work. We strive to enhance awareness of civil society conflict transformation processes, as well as raise pertinent policy issues deriving from the work in the field.

  • Cross-fertilisation of conflict transformation theory and practice. We engage in knowledge transfer, and make the conflict transformation knowledge and experiences of LPI’s and our partners available for peacebuilding practitioners and research communities. At the same time, we gather relevant theories and experiences from other contexts and organisations, and communicate them within LPI and to our partners

Means of action

Currently, the Institute runs conflict transformation programmes in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes regions in partnership with local civil society organisations and universities in Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya and DRC. There is also a common programme including publications, policy work and improved methodology.
